Springtime at the Farm

Ah, springtime! The chill of Winter is fading (slowly) from our memories. The sun has shown itself several times in the last week. Baby calves are frolicking in the field.

Calving season is one of the most exhausting times of the year, but also one of the most rewarding. It means late nights and early mornings checking the mothers-to-be for signs of impending birth. Thanks to modern techology, we can predict which bulls will produce smaller calves and grow well so we can choose the right ones for our herd. This also lessens the risk to baby and mother. So far we have 33 calves on the ground and 11 more yet to arrive!

The exciting part is seeing what developed from our match-making on paper. The calves look great this year. They are stout, friendly, have excellent conformation, and also should perform well. It will be fun to watch them grow up.
